Joyce Elizabeth Tait was born on 21 August 1931 in Bendigo to Clarance and Amelia Read. As the daughter of a school principal, Joyce moved frequently throughout Victoria, living in Foxhowe, Gisborne, and eventually Castlemaine. Though her father had high academic expectations, Joyce preferred fun over studying, developing instead an entrepreneurial spirit and mischievous sense of humour that would define her throughout life.
At twenty, Joyce completed a hairdressing apprenticeship in Kangaroo Flat before meeting Jack Tait at a Tech School Reunion Ball in 1951. After Jack's persistent courtship, they married on 6 February 1954. Together they raised three daughters, Merilyn, Robyn, and Dianne, whilst building JJ Tait's Footware into a successful Castlemaine business. Through dedication and long hours, they celebrated 100 years of trading in 1987 before retiring in 1992.
Joyce was the matriarch who united her family through Sunday dinners, annual Torquay holidays, and Easter gatherings at Boundary Bend. A passionate tennis player, gardener, and Rotary member, she embraced life fully, whether travelling across four continents, spending Queensland winters in her caravan, or learning to use her first iPhone in her eighties. She became grandmother to nine and great-grandmother to eleven, teaching each to play organ and sharing her legendary sweets and home cooking.
Joyce lived by her motto that God was her rock and family was her heart. A peoples person with an optimistic spirit, she faced life's challenges with strength and grace, always looking on the bright side whilst keeping those she loved close.
